The remote sensing cameras were out for two weeks. In that time we captured photos of whitetail deer, grey fox, raccoon, opossum, rabbit, and house cat.

Student Research Projects Begin

Students from UVa-Wise have been at the river walk site in Norton over the last three weeks planning projects, locating trap sites, and determining initial site design. 


Team leaders and volunteers were on site to initilize the trail camera project. Ten remote sensing cameras were put out in strategic locations to detect animal movements, abundance, species presence. These cameras will be checked twice a month. We hope to document a variety of species and to determine movement patterns.

Site Information

The proposed Norton river walk will run along the Guest River from the Norton Elementary School campus to the former sewage treatment plant site at the east end of the Ramsey community.


Biological surveys will be conducted on either end of the trail.

Biology Lab Field Trip

Kristine Hoffmann, Biology Instructor, took her lab students out on November 30th, December 1st, and December 5th for track and scat counts. The 35 students observed raccoon, opossum, deer, fox, house cat, domestic dog, and squirrel tracks as well as rabbit, deer, and fox scat.
